In Losing You, I Found Myself

A poem

I lost myself the day I loved you.
I became a shadow of what I used to be,
moulding myself to fit the shape of your heart,
forgetting that I had my own.

I turned into someone
who measured her worth by your smile,
who silenced her voice so yours could echo louder.
I couldn’t see the pieces of me falling away,
slowly, almost gently,
like sand slipping through fingers
until there was nothing left but a hollow shell
pretending to be whole.

You were everything.
And I thought if I loved you hard enough,
if I gave you everything I had,
I’d become enough for you to stay.

But in the end, you didn’t stay.
And in your leaving, I was shattered,
broken in places I didn’t know could break.
I looked in the mirror,
and the reflection was a stranger staring back,
the girl who loved you more than she loved herself.
