You Put Me First

A poem

You always put me first in everything you did,
In every laugh we shared, in every tear you hid.
Your love was a treasure, your heart so kind,
But I took it for granted, never opened my mind.

You’d change your plans just to make me smile,
I brushed it off, thinking I’d have you for a while.
The late-night talks, the warmth of your care,
I was lost in my world, too busy to be aware.

You gave up so much while I chased my own dreams,
Didn’t see the shadows hiding behind your beams.
You stood by my side through the storms and the pain,
But I turned away, didn’t notice your strain.

Now the silence surrounds me; your absence feels heavy,
Every memory paints a love that was ready.
I’m sorry for moments I let slip away,
For the times you needed me, but I chose to stray.

You showed me what love is, so true and so pure,
But I failed to return it, didn’t treat you like I should.
Now I’m left with the memories, the ghost of your grace,
Wishing I’d held you tighter, wishing I’d seen your face.
